Jiaogulan is the primary herb in this tonic drink, but by no means is it the only Chinese tonic herb included in Jule of the Orient. The secondary herb is also a powerhouse among the 52 tonic herbs - Goji fruit! You can read more about Jule of the Orient tonic drink and it's ingredients here.
What's With All the Goji Hype? Or is it Hype?
Over the past decade there has been a semi-explosion of Chinese tonic herb products (especially juices) hitting the natural food markets. These products all have something in common; they all contain the herb lycium barbarum, also known as goji fruit. Goji has been featured in everything from energy bars to herbal teas. This abundant use of the fruit has led many cynics to believe that goji is nothing more than a money making scam.
Some companies even took their new found love for this historic "superfruit" to another level by claiming that their goji fruit was harvested from the most pristine areas in the world. A marketing war ensued among several health/wellness companies over which goji berry was the most effective. Some organizations claimed that goji fruit from Tibet was the best, and that was what they used exclusively in their products. Others boasted that their Himalayan goji berries yielded the most powerful results. Still other companies called their goji juice "100% pure", wild harvested, pristine, etc. The tonic berry truly exploded into the Western World!
The question remains, is the hype over this seemingly healing superfruit just that, or is there some truth to all the claims being made? Let's take a closer look.
Benefits of the Goji Berry
The goji berry is not a new discovery, by any stretch of the imagination. It's use dates back to the late 1600's, when the Ming Dynasty ruled China. It was used in various combination formulas to nourish the kidneys and liver. These two organs have a tendency to get dry and overheated easily. Lycium fruit is a lifesaver when it comes to hydration and production of body fluids. Goji fruit is said to brighten the eyes, improve eyesight, build and nourish the blood, improve mood, increase libido, enhance immunity, darken the hair, moisten the lungs, and even help diabetes.
Goji - A Nutritional Powerhouse
Goji fruit contains one of the highest quantities of vitamin C of any known fruit. It also contains an abundance of carotenoids, b vitamins, zinc, trace minerals, and so much more!
Is Goji Safe For Everyone?
Goji fruit is typically used in dosages ranging from 18g-36g, and is very well tolerated by most people. Those who take the blood thinning agent Warfarin should use extreme caution when taking goji, as there have been rare reports of the two interacting.
